Yes, 35 Years!

January 12, 1973 was an auspicious day in Bali - it was the day that Poppies was born. Who would have imagined its staff and management would be celebrating a 35th anniversary some day?

We would like to thank our generations of patrons, who from that day 35 years ago, have found their way to Poppies. We were difficult to find in those early 70s, because we were so far from the centre of Kuta along a nameless dusty lane (just 50 metres actually), and such a long way from the beach along a sandy track through the coconut plantations (just 200 metres). We are difficult to find these days, because we are so centrally located in the heart of the congestion that now envelops Kuta. Yet still you manage to find us! Well, that tells a story, and the story will continue.

Poppies Bali staff now totals over 120. One of these, "Jeffrey", has been working the bar since 1973, and is seen here with the founder, at the staff celebration on Jan 12th. He has a few stories to tell, when you are next in Bali.

The Kopi Pot restaurant now has 33 staff.

Strawberry Hill, in the mountains at Bedugul has 5 - a project is underway there to build comfortable cabins that will complement the restaurant.

Spectacular beachfront Poppies in Koh Samui, Thailand, has a first class team of 92, which makes a visit to the island a top priority.

Your support has provided generations of young Balinese and Thais with jobs, and supported their extended families. We plan to continue travelling along this now world-famous 'Poppies Lane'.

Famous Barongs in Bali

Barong at Poppies
During their stay, many of our in-house guests come to regard the owners' little Shi-tzu 'Barong' as an important - albeit occasional - part of the scenery at Poppies, and its most amusing live entertainment. Therefore we felt it was time he made the Blog.

Of course this instant fame is in no way intended to diminish the standing of each and every one of our much harder working, and even more friendly members of staff who take care of them all.

A few days in the Ubud area?

Far be it for us to suggest anywhere more suitable to spend a Bali holiday than at Poppies! However we are realistic enough to understand that Poppies cannot quite be all things to all people. There are those who prefer to immerse themselves in the cultural heartland of Bali, and stay in the Ubud area from day one. There are those who prefer a comfortable home-away-from-home to a hotel. And there are those who might prefer a combination of Poppies and the cultural heartland.

We are now able to make a recommendation to any such guests - Villa Melati is managed by Poppies, and is available for rent at certain times of the year.

'Nyepi' Day, Bali's biggest festival - out with the old, and in with the new

A giant monster, or "ogoh-ogoh"
This was the scene just metres from Poppies on Jalan Legian, on the night of 18 March. Symbolizing evil and other destabilising forces, gigantic papier-mache monsters - made mainly by the youth from each local community throughout Bali - are paraded along the streets as noisily as possible, accompanied by gamelan bands, and beautifully costumed dancers, as part of a centuries-old annual cleansing ritual.

Next day is the Day of Silence ("Nyepi"), representing the dawn of a promising new year in the Balinese calendar. All shops and businesses close, and traffic ceases completely. Even Bali's airport closes for 24 hours.

Bali - in particular Kuta - once again welcomed the New Year in festive mood, with parties galore, and without incident. The Balinese are now more hopeful of a long-overdue improvement in their fortunes during 2007.

Taiwan quake
Internet and phone companies in Asia may take at least two weeks to restore services as they struggle to fix undersea cables damaged by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake off Taiwan on Tuesday 26th December.

TVs in Poppies?

Sony@PoppiesBali

Sacrilege! Abomination! After all these years of telling people we are following the majority view that TVs would be superfluous in Poppies, here we are installing them. Well, Cable TV now passes our front gate. Flat-screen LCDs are now really quite elegant, and the price has become less outrageous. And... we must admit there have been more than just one or two guests who have commented on the absence of a TV to date. There is no doubt we need to please as many potential guests as possible these days.

So now each cottage has the added facility of a Sony 23" wide-screen LCD TV with 40 channels available, together with brand-new DVD player for screening movies. The screen swivels to face either the bed or the seating alcove.

Ready for iPod
IPod and other MP3 users are also catered for - there is now a connector to the existing in-room audio system.

Of course, if any of our frequent-visitor guests were to still regard TV as an unwanted intrusion, we can remove it and retract its little stand back into the wall above the refrigerator in a jiffy...
